Guia Fortress & Lighthouse
Macau's highest point on the peninsula, topped by the oldest Western-style lighthouse on the China coast — and reachable by a short, cheap cable car ride.
Guia Hill is the highest point on the Macau peninsula, and its summit has been fortified since the 1630s. The lighthouse at the top, built in 1865, is the oldest Western-style lighthouse on the coast of China and still functions today — its light is visible from well out at sea. The whole hilltop, fort, lighthouse and chapel included, forms part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Macao.
What to see
- Guia Lighthouse — the exterior can be viewed and photographed; the interior is generally not open to the public, but it remains an active, working lighthouse.
- Chapel of Our Lady of Guia — a small 17th-century chapel next to the lighthouse, notable for frescoes that blend Western and Chinese artistic styles.
- Guia Fortress — the old fort walls and former semaphore station, used historically to signal incoming ships and typhoon warnings to the city below.
- Panoramic views — the summit gives one of the best views in Macau, taking in the peninsula, the bridge to Taipa, and on clear days out toward mainland China.
Getting up (and down)
A cable car — one of the shortest in the world — runs from Flora Garden at the base of the hill to near the summit, a ride of under two minutes. It's inexpensive and saves a genuinely steep walk. Walking trails also circle the hill through Guia Municipal Park if you'd rather hike up.

Good to know
This is a quieter, less crowded alternative to Fortaleza do Monte for a peninsula viewpoint — worth it if you've already done the main Ruins/Fortaleza route and want a different angle on the city.
