Macau was a Portuguese trading post for over four centuries before returning to Chinese administration in 1999, and that history is still legible everywhere: calçada wave-pattern pavements, baroque church façades and Cantonese temples sit a five-minute walk apart. Then there's the modern layer — a casino industry larger than Las Vegas, built on reclaimed land across the water in Cotai.
Most visitors combine both sides: a morning in the old town around Senado Square and the Ruins of St Paul's, then an afternoon exploring the canals of The Venetian or the free light-and-water shows on the Cotai Strip.
