Taipa Village

Taipa was a separate island until land reclamation joined it to Coloane and, later, to the Cotai casino strip. Its old village core survived that transformation almost untouched: a tangle of narrow lanes around Rua do Cunha, a row of pastel-green colonial mansions on the waterfront, and some of Macau's best Macanese bakeries — all a five-minute taxi ride from The Venetian.

What to see

• Rua do Cunha — Taipa's main pedestrian food street, packed with bakeries, jerky stalls and egg tart shops.
• Taipa Houses-Museum — five mint-green Portuguese colonial villas on the old waterfront, now house small museums on Macanese domestic life, costume and decorative arts.

• Taipa Village streets — Rua dos Clérigos and the surrounding lanes are worth wandering without a fixed plan; this is Taipa's real appeal.

Taipa is arguably a better food stop than the peninsula's main tourist strip — same specialities, fewer queues:
