Macau has separate immigration controls

Crossing from Hong Kong to Macau by ferry or bridge still means clearing immigration. Hong Kong permission does not automatically give you permission to enter Macau, and a mainland Chinese visa does not substitute for Macau entry permission. Treat each territory as a separate border decision.

Passport validity: the official rule

For non-residents, Macao's current immigration guidance says a passport or accepted travel document should normally be valid for at least 90 days beyond the period of your intended stay. That is more precise than the common internet advice to carry six months' validity. Airline or onward-country rules can still be stricter, so check every part of your itinerary.

Visa-free entry and visas

Many visitors qualify for visa-free entry, but the allowed period varies by nationality and document. Other travellers need a visa or prior authorisation. Do not copy a friend's allowance from a different passport. If you are not clearly covered by an exemption, check the official visa and authorisation pages before buying non-refundable travel.

What immigration can ask for

Beyond a valid document and entry permission, visitors should be ready to explain their travel purpose and stay. Officials can require evidence that you can support yourself and leave Macau. Keep accommodation details and onward or return travel information accessible, especially if your itinerary is unusual.

Hong Kong–Macau trips

On a Hong Kong–Macau combination trip, allow time for check-in, baggage handling and immigration at both ends. A ferry ticket is transport, not immigration permission. Re-entering Hong Kong after Macau also means meeting Hong Kong's rules again.

Arriving through mainland China

If you enter or leave through Zhuhai or another mainland crossing, mainland Chinese entry rules are a separate question. Make sure your mainland visa, visa-free transit eligibility or other permission covers the route you plan; Macau status does not grant mainland entry.

Entry slips and records

Macau uses electronic immigration records for many visitors. Keep any arrival record or proof provided to you, particularly if a hotel, transport provider or later border officer may need your authorised stay dates.

Children and families

Each traveller needs an acceptable travel document and must independently meet entry rules. If a child is travelling with one parent or another adult, also check airline and home-country consent-document requirements; those are separate from Macau immigration law.

Before you leave for Macau

• Confirm visa exemption or visa/authorisation for the exact passport.
• Check the 90-days-beyond-intended-stay passport rule.
• Check mainland China or Hong Kong rules separately if they are on your route.
• Keep onward travel and accommodation details handy.
• Re-check shortly before departure because immigration rules can change.
