Pataca is the official currency, Hong Kong Dollars are widely accepted, and cards/mobile payments are common — but carrying some cash still makes Macau easier.
Macau's official currency is the Macanese Pataca (MOP). The Macao Government Tourism Office says the Pataca is linked to the Hong Kong Dollar at MOP 103.20 to HKD 100, and HKD is widely accepted in Macau. That makes money straightforward for travellers arriving from Hong Kong, but it does not mean the two currencies are literally interchangeable at every counter or that you will always receive change in HKD.
Pataca or Hong Kong Dollars?

If you pay in HKD, a merchant may return change in MOP. For a short visit that is usually harmless; spend the remaining Pataca before leaving because it is far less useful outside Macau than HKD.
Cards and mobile payments
Electronic payment is common. MGTO lists UnionPay, American Express, JCB, Visa and Mastercard among widely accepted cards, while many merchants also support mobile wallets and contactless systems such as Apple Pay and international wallet networks. Acceptance still varies by merchant, so a phone wallet should complement rather than replace a physical card and cash.
- Large resorts, malls and hotels: cards are normally easy.
- Small restaurants, markets and older local shops: keep smaller MOP/HKD notes handy.
- Foreign cards: your issuer may add overseas transaction or ATM fees.
ATMs and exchanging money
Currency exchange is readily available at the airport, ferry terminals, many hotels, banks and exchange counters. ATMs are widespread in the tourist districts and resorts. If an ATM or card terminal offers to convert the transaction into your home currency, compare the displayed rate carefully; paying/withdrawing in the local currency can often avoid an extra conversion layer from the terminal operator.
Cash declaration rule
Travellers entering Macau with cash or negotiable instruments worth MOP 120,000 or more must use the Red Channel and declare it to Customs. That threshold is a legal reporting rule, not a limit on ordinary travel spending. If you are carrying anything close to that amount, check the current Macau Customs requirements before travel.
A simple money setup for most visitors
- Bring one physical Visa/Mastercard/UnionPay card plus a backup.
- Keep a modest amount of MOP or HKD cash for small purchases.
- Use HKD if you already have it, but do not chase a tiny exchange-rate difference for a short trip.
- Keep Pataca change for local spending rather than taking a large balance home.
Our take
Macau is easier with a mixed setup than a cash-only or phone-only strategy: one reliable card, a backup card and a small cash float. If you arrive from Hong Kong with HKD, there is usually no need for an urgent currency-exchange mission.
