Coloane Village
Macao's old fishing-village side: waterfront lanes, small temples, a chapel, dried seafood and enough quiet to make Cotai feel much further away than it is.
Coloane Village is the Macao stop I would choose when the resort scale starts becoming too much. The old settlement sits on the southwest side of Coloane, facing the water towards Hengqin, and MGTO still frames the area around its fishing-village history, lanes, temples, food and waterfront.
This is not a place that needs a rigid attraction schedule. Walk between the square, pier, chapel and temples, eat something, then decide whether to continue to Hac Sa, a trail or the revitalised Lai Chi Vun shipyard area.
Start at the waterfront and village lanes
The centre is compact enough to explore on foot. Largo do Presidente António Ramalho Eanes acts as a small pedestrian hub connecting older lanes and local food/souvenir businesses. The waterfront is the clue to how this community worked before roads and reclamation changed the islands.
Chapel of St Francis Xavier
The cream-and-white Chapel of St Francis Xavier was built in 1928. MGTO currently lists opening hours of 09:30–17:30. It is a real religious site, so treat those hours as visitor access rather than an invitation to interrupt worship or private activity.
Coloane's small temples
MGTO's village route includes the Ancient Temple of Kun Iam, the Ancient Temple of Tin Hau, Sam Seng Temple and Tam Kong Temple. The Tin Hau temple is described by MGTO as dating to around 1763, making it the oldest temple on Coloane Island.
Keep noise low and do not stage photographs around worshippers. “Temple hopping” is your sightseeing frame, not the purpose of the buildings.
Coloane Pier tells the transport story
The current pier was rebuilt in 1873. Before road connections transformed the islands, it was an important ferry point linking Coloane with Macao, Taipa and the mainland. MGTO notes that its transport role faded as bridges and reclamation changed the geography.
What to eat
Portuguese-style egg tarts are the obvious visitor magnet, but I would not reduce Coloane to one bakery queue. The official tourism route also highlights local noodle shops, dried seafood products and small restaurants around the waterfront.
If you want the famous tart stop, compare the queue with your appetite. Fresh tarts are worth trying; spending half your visit standing in one line is optional.
Add Lai Chi Vun for industrial heritage
The nearby Lai Chi Vun Shipyards are part of Coloane's former shipbuilding landscape. MGTO says the shipyards have been designated local immovable property and a revitalisation area of more than 3,000 square metres is being used for cultural and community purposes.
Hac Sa Beach is a separate add-on
Hac Sa Beach is on Coloane but not in the village centre. Add it for a longer half-day, but check current beach conditions and swimming guidance. You do not need to cram village, beach and a major hike into one short visit.
Getting there from Cotai or the peninsula
Use a public bus or taxi. I would not publish a fixed transfer time because traffic and your exact starting point matter. Check a live route planner for the current bus rather than following an old article's route number indefinitely. There is no need to rent a car purely for this outing.
How long to allow
Two to three hours is comfortable for the village, food and a slow wander. Allow half a day if adding Lai Chi Vun, Hac Sa or a longer trail. If pairing it with Taipa Village, do not rush both just to say you saw them.

Come here when you want Macao to shrink back down to human scale. I would rather do one lazy Coloane loop properly than turn it into six pins and a stopwatch.
