Best Time to Visit Macau
The short answer: late October to early December, or February to April. Here's the full picture, season by season.
Two things drive Macau's travel calendar: the weather (see our full weather guide) and Chinese mainland public holidays, which can bring enormous day-tripper crowds across the border and push hotel prices up sharply.
By season
Autumn (Oct – Nov): the sweet spot
Warm days, cool evenings, low humidity and minimal rain. This is widely considered Macau's best window — comfortable enough to walk the old town for hours without wilting.
Winter (Dec – Feb): mild and quiet
Mild temperatures, dry air, and generally lighter crowds outside Chinese New Year. Good value on hotel rates in early-to-mid December and January.
Spring (Mar – Apr): warming up
Pleasant but increasingly humid, with a chance of misty, overcast days. Still a solid choice, especially early in the season.
Summer (May – Sep): hot, wet, and typhoon-prone
Macau's low season for a reason — heat, humidity and the risk of a typhoon signal disrupting ferries and border crossings. Hotel rates can drop here, which appeals to budget travellers willing to plan around the weather.
Holidays to plan around
| Holiday | When | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese New Year | Late Jan – mid Feb (dates vary) | Heaviest crowds and highest hotel prices of the year |
| Labour Day "Golden Week" | Early May | Very busy with mainland Chinese visitors |
| National Day "Golden Week" | Early October | Very busy; book well ahead if travelling then |
| Macau Grand Prix | Mid-November | Street circuit races draw crowds and close some roads — see our Macau Grand Prix guide |
Our take
If your dates are flexible, avoid Chinese New Year and the two Golden Weeks unless you specifically want the festival energy — hotel prices can double or more, and the old town gets genuinely packed. See our full public holidays & opening hours guide for what closes and what doesn't.
